Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, can refresh tired eyes and make you look younger by removing excess skin from the eyelids and the bags from under your eyes. It will correct heavy, wrinkled or baggy eyelids to rejuvenate your facial expressions.

One of the earlier signs of aging in the eyes is the sagging of eyebrows and a fullness or swelling of the upper eyelid skin.

Heavy or wrinkled eyelids may be a family trait or caused by aging. Baggy eyelids are caused by the normal fat pads around the eyes starting to protrude. The skin also loses some of its elasticity and contributes to a tired look.

How does eyelid surgery work?

An upper blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and muscle from the upper eyelids. A lower blepharoplasty removes the excess eyelid skin, muscle and fat from under the eyes, while preserving your natural expression, to make you look youthful and refreshed.

Eyelid surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia or a combination of local and sedation, called neuroleptic. Surgery will last from one and a half to three hours.

The surgeon measures the amount of skin to be removed from the eyelid. The incision on the upper eyelid is made along the normal folds of the lid and the excess skin is removed. The incision on the lower eyelid will be made just under the eyelashes and protruding fat is removed as necessary. Any scars should be hidden in the natural folds of the skin.

The amount of skin removed is usually very small. The incisions are closed with fine sutures. The eyebrow can also be lifted during this procedure by raising the forehead.

How will I heal from my blepharoplasty?

Patients generally heal quickly after eyelid surgery and complications are rare, in part due to good circulation in the eyelids. Hospitalization will usually not last more than a day and most patients go home the same day of surgery. Swelling and bruising will generally subside within one to two weeks. Full recovery will normally take four to six months.

Results can last for many years. The correction of the bags under the eyelids is generally permanent.

Dr. Kevin O’Grady will work with you and examine the health of your eyes and tone of your eyelids to determine the best course of action to refresh your expression for a more youthful look.
